Hulu Political Ads

October 5th, 2010 No comments

I watch quite a bit of anime on Hulu, and in the last week Wisconsin-specific political ads have started popping into the mix.

That’s hilarious on a number of levels, though I curse the ease with which you can look up the geographic location of an IP. Damn you, TDS, for not using a bigger dynamic pool. Damn you to hell!

Ahem. I just find it humorous that the technophobic halfwits who run our government, or in the Republicans’ case, want to do so after the election, have short ads running on Hulu. I can almost see the conversation going on now in the media consultant/demon’s offices:

Old Luddite Politician: What’s this here? 40k for ‘Hulu’? What are we spending 40 grand on hula hoops for?
Media Demon: Not ‘hula’, ‘Hulu’. It’s a video streaming service online, sort of like television you can watch on the internet.
Old Luddite: There’s TV on the internet? Next you’ll be telling me it has pornography!

I wonder if they have any controls over what content their ads show next to, or if you could get a Ron Johnson ad in some unrated T&A show, of which Hulu has, err, quite a few. That would be some messaging.

“Vote Ron Johnson, but now, back to your breasts! They’re bouncy!’

It can break your heart to see naivete go unpunished, but fortunately in this life, it rarely does so for long.

FDL Stuff

September 29th, 2010 2 comments

So it’s been a week since I asked to have my content pulled and… it’s still there. No reply to my emails either.

What the hell? I mean, seriously. This goes so far beyond slipshod it’s ridiculous.

I guess I’m not worthy of a response. Yeesh. I am so glad I don’t bother over there anymore, although I did go back to comment briefly on a post attacking my older work.

See, on FDL, if you’re a lowly community diarist, you’re not allowed to even critique other people’s work on the site without a talking to from Rayne, the supposed editor of the Seminal, who won’t return my emails. But if you’re a front-pager, you can do it in a slippery, disingenuous, fact free manner, and that’s all right.

Poor Nathan Aschbacher was pulling his hair out in the comments over the whole thing.

I never did post those pictures, because I’ve been doing other stuff, working in real life. Honestly, it’s so refreshing. I liked having people read my stuff, but there are just so many trolls in the FDL commentariat… ok, a quick primer on writing diaries for FDL.

If you want a ton of people to agree with what you’re saying, criticize Obama without any concrete plan to oppose his agenda.

If you want endless argument and belittling from front-pagers, suggest not voting Democratic in the upcoming election. That will have Phoenix Woman on your thread shouting nonsensical horseshit about Nader and German Communists and how not voting Dem will lead to Hitler.

If you want to be ignored or attacked as a bigot, write something from a strongly atheist perspective. FDL may not look it, but it’s a very, very religious crowd overall, and they do not appreciate having their sacred cows questioned. Peterr and Glenn Smith in particular show a great disdain for atheist positions, and Peterr won’t even accept the fact that America has massive religious discrimination written into the tax code. Which is a complete denial of objective reality, but hey; he is a pastor. Goes with the territory.

It got to be so damned boring. Write what they want to hear, and you get lots of attention; write something the mob disagrees with, and you get knee-jerk reactions and vitriol. It felt less and less about informing or discussing than it seemed to be about venting. I started to feel like a cheap date, every time I put up a diary about politics. Circle the wagon, criticize Obama, and then what? Go back and vote for him anyway? How is that productive?

So I’ve been working around the house, catching up on chores, and man, everything is just better and easier without the hassle. I’ve been putting off finding another place to post. I like writing, I like being read, but yeesh.

I guess I’ll send another email about my stuff today, and then chill. Got other stuff to do, after all. You can see the antics of my last post here on Flickr though. Note how the mod will lie about deleting my comments, change them to say something else, and censor any criticism of their censorship itself, while leaving attacks on me up and untouched.

Almost like I hit a nerve somehow.
